What does the test measure?
The TOEIC test is a benchmark of English language skills in listening and reading.

What is the test format?
The TOEIC test is a paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice assessment. There are two separately timed sections of 100 questions each.

How long is the test?
The test lasts approximately 2 ½ hours. Examinees have
     Listening 45 minutes for Section I
     Reading 75 minutes for Section II
the remaining time to respond to biographical questions and a brief questionnaire about education and work history.

Are questions taken from specific contexts?
TOEIC test questions are drawn from a variety of real-world settings and situations — from dining out and entertainment, to travel and housing. Other contexts include:

  • Corporate Development - research, product developmentFinance and Budgeting - banking, investments, taxes, accounting, billingHealth - medical insurance, visiting doctors, dentists, clinics, hospitalsManufacturing - assembly lines, plant management, quality controlOffices - board meetings, committees, letters, memoranda, telephone, fax and e-mail messages, office equipment and furniture, office procedures
  • Personnel/Human Resources - recruiting, hiring, retiring, salaries, promotions, job applications, job advertisements, pensions, awards Technical Areas - electronics, technology, computers, laboratories and related equipment, technical specifications

How is the test scored?
Scores on the TOEIC test are determined by the number of correct answers. The number of correct responses on each section is converted to a scale score.

Can test takers fail the test?
TOEIC isn't a pass or fail test. It simply enables you to demonstrate your current English language skills.

Who uses it?
Many companies, colleges, and universities require nonnative English-speaking professionals and students to take the test. It is a way to see if you have the language skills needed to succeed in those environments.
