TOEIC® Listening and Reading

The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is a fair and valid of assessment of English-language listening and reading skills for the workplace. TEST FORMAT

The TOEIC® Listening and Reading test is a paper-and-pencil or computer based multiple-choice assessment. There are two timed sections of 100 questions each.

Test Length

The test takes approximately 2½ hours, with:

  • 45 minutes for Section I: Listening
  • 75 minutes for Section II: Reading
  • approximately 30 minutes to answer biographical questions

Test Content

Section I: Listening

Test takers listen to a variety of questions and short conversations recorded in English, then answer questions based on what they have heard (100 items total).

  • Part 1: Photographs (6 questions)
  • Part 2: Question-Response (25 questions)
  • Part 3: Conversations (39 questions)
  • Part 4: Short Talks (30 questions)

Section II: Reading

Test takers read a variety of materials and respond at their own pace (100 items total).

TOEIC® Official Learning and Preparation Course (OLPC) is an online service using real-life workplace scenarios and over 1,000 authentic TOEIC® test questions to help you build the English skills you need for everyday workplace situations and prepare you for success on the TOEIC Listening and Reading test. SCORES

Scores on the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test are determined by the number of correct answers, which is converted to a scaled score. The score report provides Listening, Reading and total scaled scores. The total scaled score is derived from adding the two scaled scores together.

Score Reports

  • Public Testing Program

When you take the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test independently in a public test center, you will receive a score report that lists your Listening, Reading and total scores. Scores are confidential and released only to ETS and test takers.

  • Institutional Testing Program

When you participate in the Institutional Testing Program, where the TOEIC Listening and Reading test is administered at the request of a sponsoring organization or institution, results are reported in a score roster and/or Official Institutional Score Report that is sent directly from ITC to the sponsoring organization or institution. Scores are confidential and released only to ETS and the sponsoring organization.

Intended for internal use only, the roster cannot be used by test takers as an indication of their official score. The score roster is intended to help organizations interpret the scores and includes:

  • individual scores (listening comprehension, reading comprehension and total scores)
  • scores from the most recent testing session (average score, frequency distribution and range of scores)
  • scores from all testing sessions within the same institution
  • scores within the client’s industry and country
  • specialized reports that can be reproduced at the client’s request, which may include organizational results for all test takers during a given time period or in certain job categories

 

Score Descriptors

The TOEIC® Listening and Reading Score Descriptors (PDF) provide additional information for understanding a test taker’s strengths and weaknesses and for identifying areas that need improvement.

The TOEIC® Can-Do Guide (PDF) may help you interpret TOEIC Listening and Reading scores within specific contexts. The guide presents a series of tables that describe the activities that test takers in certain score bands are able to do, are able to do with difficulty, and are not able to do.

 

The TOEIC® Speaking and Writing tests are valid assessments of English-language speaking and writing skills for the workplace. The TOEIC Speaking and Writing tests can be taken together or separately. In addition, when taken together with the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test, they complement each other and provide a reliable measurement of all four English-language communication skills.

SCORES

Speaking Test Scores

  • Questions 1–9 are rated on a scale of 0–3.
  • Questions 10–11 are rated on a scale of 0–5.
  • The sum of the ratings is converted to a scaled score of 0–200.
  • Eight proficiency levels are provided.

Writing Test Scores

  • Questions 1–5 are rated on a scale of 0–3.
  • Questions 6–7 are rated on a scale of 0–4.
  • Question 8 is rated on a scale of 0–5.
  • The sum of the ratings is converted to a scaled score of 0–200.
  • Nine proficiency levels are provided.

Scoring Process

ETS uses a rigorous scoring process to ensure fair, reliable results. Test responses are sent through a secure online system and scored by certified and calibrated ETS raters, who are closely monitored throughout the process.

Multiple raters independently score responses to the Speaking and Writing tests. This ensures a level of fairness in the scoring process that traditional one-on-one interviews alone cannot provide.

Score Descriptors

Designed for beginning learners, the TOEIC Bridge test measures the listening and reading comprehension skills used in an international environment. The test provides reliable, valid and consistent test results to assess English-language proficiency. Business organizations, academic institutions and training programs within corporations can use TOEIC Bridge test results to help:

  • place students at appropriate English-language program levels
  • highlight English-language instruction areas that need improvement
  • motivate learners to improve their English-language skills
  • measure program and curriculum effectiveness
  • determine academic and workplace readiness

TEST FORMAT

The TOEIC Bridge test is a paper-and-pencil test  or computer based test that measures a test taker’s ability to listen to and read everyday English.

 

Test Length

The test takes approximately 1½ hours, with:

  • 25 minutes for Section I: Listening
  • 35 minutes for Section II: Reading
  • approximately 30 minutes to complete education and work history questionnaire

Test Content

The TOEIC Bridge test is composed of 100 multiple-choice questions, broken into two sections:

Section I: Listening

Test takers will listen to recorded statements, questions, short conversations and short talks in English via audio or CD and answer 50 questions based on what they hear. There are three parts:

  • Part 1: Photographs (15 questions)
  • Part 2: Question-Response (20 questions)
  • Part 3: Short Conversations and Short Talks (15 questions)

Section II: Reading

Test takers will read single sentences, as well as texts, and then answer 50 questions based on what they read. There are two parts:

  • Part 4: Incomplete Sentences (30 questions)
  • Part 5: Reading Comprehension (20 questions)
